Berlin Exile(s), a collaborative “cabaret-documentary” written by Drew Lichtenberg and directed by Cecilia Rubino, comes to Brandeis University on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time (US). The free workshop performance will take place in Rapaporte Treasure Hall, Goldfarb Library, with a livestream available via Zoom.
Drawing on writings by activists, political dissidents, and radical artists, alongside cabaret songs, poems, and German theater music, this multimedia work explores the experience of displacement. The cast includes Rina Dutta as Hannah Arendt and David Gould as Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Müller, with music performed by Simone Baron and Melissa Wimbish and media design by Ulrich Lehmann.
Following an early workshop at Johns Hopkins University and recent performances in New York, including at The New School, the project now brings its exploration of exile to the Boston area and an international online audience.
The 80-minute performance will be followed by a 20-minute panel discussion and Q&A featuring Cecilia Rubino, Drew Lichtenberg, and Eugene Sheppard, moderated by Sabine von Mering.
Presented by Brandeis University’s Center for German and European Studies and sponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Washington.
